Tom Johnson is on the home run to becoming a chartered accountant as part of completing the Page Kirk graduate scheme. Here, he talks about the steep learning curve and support he's received from the firm.

Having passed my final exams at the end of last year to become an ICAEW exam-qualified accountant, I feel that now is good time to reflect on my three years as a trainee accountant with Page Kirk.

I was under no misapprehension about how hard it would be – coming straight out of university and into further studying with more exams, whilst working full-time – and the ACA scheme didn't let me down!

I was fortunate that I had some exemptions from some of the earlier ICAEW exams through studying accounting and finance at university, so my first six months weren't as hectic, exam-wise, as some of my other colleagues. You should not, however be put off if you are coming into accountancy as a total novice. Page Kirk deliberately spread out your exam sittings, so lack of exemptions will have no effect on how early you qualify.

The benefit you get with training to be an ICAEW chartered accountant at somewhere like Page Kirk is you are offered such a breadth of experience. Not only does this help you improve as an accountant (as you are given real responsibility early, on meaning you learn on the job fast), but it also allows you to apply some real-life knowledge in your exams. Although the responsibility you get right from the beginning might seem daunting, you are safe in the knowledge that your colleagues are always there to assist you any time you want it. Without the supportive culture at Page Kirk, my experience would have been a fraction of what it was.

Not only has Page Kirk given me the capability to succeed in the technical aspects of accounting, but I have also developed my interpersonal skills. During my first three years, I represented the firm at numerous networking events and assisted at several client meetings. Looking back, this was such a key element in the speed of my professional development.

Although a potential of 15 exams spread over three years might seem a lengthy process, I feel like my training contract flew by due to the fact that I have had such a variety of roles in that time. I was never out of my depth as I was able to call on colleagues whenever I felt like I needed support. You can be sure everyone will be there to celebrate in each other's success, mainly because exam passes mean it's your turn to buy a Birds cake round!

It has been a challenging three years with lots of ups and downs, but the rewards at the end are definitely worth it. Now I have qualified, I can say working at Page Kirk whilst studying for the ACA qualification has given me the confidence to go forward as a well-rounded professional, both technically and socially. It has also set me up for a successful, lifelong career in a stable industry.
