Self-Assessment Tax Returns

The world of self-assessment can sometimes seem daunting, but you don’t have to complete your tax return on your own. With the help of Page Kirk, you can make sure your documentation complies with HMRC’s expectations. At the same time, you can be confident you won’t miss out on your entitlement to reliefs and allowances.

Self Assesment

What are self-assessment tax returns?

Introduced in 1996, self-assessment is the means by which HMRC collects income tax, capital gains tax and national insurance contributions on income other than that earned from employment, pensions etc, which is collected at source by PAYE (Pay As You Earn).

HMRC has powers to charge penalties for not complying with the rules – if you miss submission and payment deadlines, for instance, or declare figures that contain errors or mistakes, even where this is done innocently.

Taxpayers are required to ‘self-assess’ their income including, for example, their profit from trades, professions and vocations, rental profit and so on, and then calculate their tax and national insurance contributions liabilities and submit their self-assessment tax return to HMRC.

How our service can help you

Our work starts long before we begin to prepare your tax return. We want to ensure that you don’t fall foul of any penalties for non-compliance with the tax authorities. It is therefore important to always keep you aware of upcoming deadlines and aspects of compliance. These include:

Helping you to keep records and making you aware of the things you should be keeping, by providing you with advice and checklists.

Ensuring you keep fully compliant and good records, to help you avoid enquiries and penalties from HM Revenue & Customs.

Offering a tax return information checklist to save you time getting together all the information we will need.

Reminding you to provide exactly what we need to complete your tax return.

Making you aware of what to submit (and why), ensuring work is done quickly, with as little effort on your part as possible.

Writing to you at the beginning of the tax year to remind you of some key factors.

Contacting you If you haven’t submitted your information by a pre-agreed date.

Making you aware of your legal obligations, deadlines and potential penalties at all times.

Our self-assessment service also includes a dedicated client manager, tax advice and consultations to ensure you reduce your tax liability wherever possible.
