My experience being on the Page Kirk chartered accountant graduate scheme

Steph Gubas speaks about her experience of training to be a chartered accountant.

Rewind 3 years. I was doing a job I loved, but with the knowledge that the career prospects were extremely limited and I knew I needed a bigger challenge. Roll forwards 6 months, I had completed two weeks work experience with Page Kirk LLP and was now sat at my new desk in their accounts team. In a blink of an eye I had gone from running around playgrounds and fields in my tracksuit bottoms to learning about what a debit and a credit was…nervous would be an understatement.

My first few weeks were a complete blur, with my time spent working on year end accounts, getting to know everyone, booking college dates and adjusting to my new working environment. At first it was daunting trying to remember all the technical knowledge, and considering I had come from a non-accounting background (I did BSc Biology at The University of Bath) I had a lot to remember. However, it was reassuring to know the team were always happy to answer questions and provide support when needed.

I have now been at Page Kirk for two and a half years and I cannot believe how fast time is flying by. I have completed 14 out of the 15 exams with only the Case study exam to go which I will be sitting in July. Achieving high level results has really spurred me on to continue to do the best I possibly can and it definitely proves hard work pays off. It has also been great to take control of my exam schedule and adapt it to what works best for me and my learning style. Studying for my exams alongside working full time has meant I can apply the knowledge learnt at college to real life accountancy situations, giving me the confidence to answer questions from clients and complete jobs more efficiently. I have loved being exposed to a variety of business sectors as it means no two days are the same.

Thinking back over the last two and a half years it's hard to believe how much I have learnt, not just in terms of technical knowledge but personal skills as well. I really appreciate Page Kirk for taking a chance on me and providing me with this opportunity. It has been a fun and rewarding time so far, and I've really enjoyed getting involved in the charity and social events that have been organised. I couldn't recommend applying through the graduate scheme enough. Put yourself out there, be enthusiastic, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Applications for our graduate scheme close on Sunday 8th March at 11.59pm.
