More study and a 9 to 5 job? It’s well worth the effort.

As the deadline for applications to the Page Kirk graduate scheme fast approaches, Tom Leigh from our accounts department explains just how much he has benefited from being part of the programme.

Two and a half years ago I was in my final year at university scrambling around trying to find and apply for graduate jobs. I was looking for something that would allow me to put my university degree (BA Accounting and Finance) into practice. Page Kirk LLP offered me the opportunity to develop my career and start on the path to becoming a qualified accountant. Having joined on a three-year contract, and now being in my last six months, I can see how much I have developed – both in terms of my knowledge and as a person.

Studying and working at the same time is not an easy task. It is difficult to get the work-life balance right. Having a degree in accounting did make it a bit easier to transition from university life to the new working schedule. I was able to use the background knowledge I had and I was able to apply it at work. As soon as you start at Page Kirk, you are enrolled at college in preparation to start studying for exams. You will get straight into the thick of it and you will need to be able to juggle everything to ensure you pass the exams. It's not easy. Having said this, most people here have gone through the same process and are more than willing to help if you need it.

My time at Page Kirk has provided a multitude of opportunities. I have gone from preparing small rental and small sole-trade accounts to large rental portfolio and limited company accounts. I have also had opportunities to experience audit, starting off as a junior and working my way to a senior. The audit experience allows you to see how different companies work and gives you exposure to many different systems. Having these opportunities not only allows you to be able to put your studies into practice, but it also means that no day is the same. You can come to work and not know what you are doing from one day to the next. This provides a large amount of variety in the role.

Coming to the end of my training contract, it is clear how much I have learnt and grown. The hard work and late nights studying are paying off. It is a daunting prospect knowing you will be studying for a further three years, all while working a 9-5 job. There is a light at the end of the tunnel though, and it was definitely worth it. The people at here have supported me along the way, with everyone willing to help and easy to talk to. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and would highly recommend applying to join the Page Kirk family.
