Self-Assessment Tax Returns

The world of self-assessment can sometimes seem daunting, but you don’t have to complete your tax return on your own. With the help of Page Kirk, you can make sure your documentation complies with HMRC’s expectations. At the same time, you can be confident you won’t miss out on your entitlement to reliefs and allowances.

Self Assesment

What are self-assessment tax returns?

Introduced in 1996, self-assessment is the means by which HMRC collects income tax, capital gains tax and national insurance contributions on income other than that earned from employment, pensions etc, which is collected at source by PAYE (Pay As You Earn).

HMRC has powers to charge penalties for not complying with the rules – if you miss submission and payment deadlines, for instance, or declare figures that contain errors or mistakes, even where this is done innocently.

Taxpayers are required to ‘self-assess’ their income including, for example, their profit from trades, professions and vocations, rental profit and so on, and then calculate their tax and national insurance contributions liabilities and submit their self-assessment tax return to HMRC.
