Thinking of a career in accountancy? Josh Ruthven, one of our Accounts and Tax Trainees, explains why you should take a look at Page Kirk's placement and graduate programmes.

I started at Page Kirk in September 2019 and have now finished both my ACA and CTA exams. During my time here, I have had exposure to accounts, tax returns and audit. I have managed my own portfolio of tax return clients whilst completing accounts for both unincorporated businesses and limited companies. I have enjoyed being given experience across these three services.

Development opportunities

As I have become more experienced in my role, I have helped train junior staff, including graduate and placement students. Page Kirk have offered me fantastic training and I was nominated as a finalist for the Apprentice of the Year Award in 2021 for my work on furlough claims. I have also recently had a larger role in business development as I have been handling new client consultations, which is something I enjoy.

Part of the team

One of the best things about Page Kirk is the collaborative team. There are a lot of trainees and people there to help when you need it. It is easy to ask questions and people will take the time to show you how to do things. This was especially important for me as I did not come from an accounting background, as I studied Maths with Economics at university. The combination of hands-on practical work experience and study time for the ACA/CTA qualification really helps you get up to speed.

Learning and working with clients

Working at Page Kirk has also allowed me to develop lots of different skills such as communication, problem solving and adaptability. Working with clients on a day-to-day basis is very enjoyable and you get a great feeling when you help them. By having my own portfolio, I have been able to build relationships with these clients.

Charity and social

Page Kirk offers the opportunity to get involved in many charity and social events. The charity work is great as it brings everyone at the firm together help make a positive difference. The social events are allow you to spend an enjoyable time with your colleagues in a setting outside work. This creates a great sense of camaraderie and contributes to a positive work culture.

Summary

I would advise people to apply to Page Kirk, because it is a fantastic training firm where you can learn lots in both practical work experience and studying towards your ACA qualification. It is a great opportunity to progress your career and make lots of friends along the way.
