As part of the 12 charities we have supported throughout 2023, we dedicated the month of April to supporting Sexual Violence Support Services (Notts SVS Services). They do incredible work with people across Nottinghamshire. Page Kirk's Chartered Accountant and charity specialist accountant Tom Johnson explains more.

In a world where sexual violence is still a taboo subject , where the voiceless often remain unheard, organisations such as Nottinghamshire Sexual Violence Support Services give hope – actively working to empower survivors and break the silence and stigma surrounding sexual violence.

Established with a mission to provide thorough support to survivors of sexual violence, Notts SVS Services has been an asset to Nottinghamshire. Set up over 40 years ago by a group of women, the charity understands the profound impact that sexual violence can have on individuals and communities, and they are committed to creating a safe space for survivors to heal and rebuild their lives.

Services Offered

Notts SVS Services offers a range of vital services designed to address the diverse needs of survivors of all genders, aged 18+. These include counselling, advocacy and practical support. The organisation recognises that every survivor's journey is unique and, as such, they provide tailored assistance to help individuals navigate the challenges they face. The compassionate and skilled professionals at Notts SVS Services work tirelessly to ensure survivors feel heard, believed and supported.

Counselling

One of the cornerstones of Notts SVS Services work is their counselling services. Trained therapists provide survivors with a confidential and non-judgmental space to explore their emotions, process trauma and develop coping mechanisms. Through individual and group counselling sessions, survivors are empowered to regain control over their lives and move forward with strength and resilience.

Advocacy

Notts SVS Services is also dedicated to advocating for survivors within the criminal justice system and beyond. The charity recognises the importance of amplifying the voices of survivors, ensuring their rights are respected and promoting a culture that rejects victim-blaming. By working closely with survivors and providing them with the necessary information and support, Notts SVS Services aim to create a more compassionate and understanding society.

Prevention and Education

In addition to supporting survivors, Notts SVS Services is actively engaged in community outreach and education programmes. The charity strives to prevent future incidents and challenge the societal norms that contribute to a culture of silence, by raising awareness about sexual violence, consent and healthy relationships.. Notts SVS Services believes that education is a powerful tool in creating lasting change. They are committed to fostering a community that prioritises respect and consent.

Community Impact

The impact of Notts SVS Services extends far beyond the individuals they directly support. By fostering a community that is informed and supportive, the charity contributes to the broader movement to end sexual violence. Notts SVS Services is actively working to create a network of resources and support for survivors, through partnerships with local agencies, schools and community groups.

At Page Kirk, we are proud to have supported Notts SVS Services through various initiatives, such as our Grand National Sweepstake, Coronation raffle and dress-down days. These efforts not only provided funds but also sent a powerful message of solidarity to survivors.

Karen Jardine, Campaigns and Communications Officer, Nottinghamshire Sexual Violence Support Services, commented:

“Notts SVS Services were delighted to be Page Kirk's chosen charity for April. Sexual violence affects many people's lives and yet it is rarely talked about. This can increase the feelings of shame and isolation for survivors. Through your fundraising, you are not only helping to change the lives of those who have experienced sexual violence, but you are also letting them know that they are valued and are seen. Thank you.”
