The end of QuickBooks Desktop is coming. Our Cloud Accounting Technician JOSH SMITHURST explains why and advises on some of the steps you may choose to take.

It has been recently announced that Intuit has made the decision to discontinue all versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier and Enterprise Solutions v20. From 31st May 2023, the desktop application may still work, but any add-ons and support will be unavailable.

Why is this happening?

QuickBooks are discontinuing their desktop versions to focus on releasing new versions of the online software. This is becoming increasingly popular due to its improved functionality and broad reach across many different sectors. By developing more advanced online software, Intuit is giving the user more choice on how to manage their finances. With more third-party applications being compatible with QuickBooks Online, the options are becoming almost endless.

What does this mean for QuickBooks Desktop users?

You will need to be using accounting software that can submit returns and comply with Making Tax Digital regulations. Making use of the online QuickBooks software will allow you to remain compliant. They have options for all kinds of businesses, large and small.

What are the next steps?

Get in touch with your accountants or advisors. They should be able to suggest what software is best for your business, whether that is QuickBooks Online, Xero or something else. Once you have decided on your new software, you can then start the process of transferring the relevant data across and personalising the new platform to suit your business.

How will my data be saved?

Unlike desktop software, where you must save a back-up of your data every time you update the data, online software is automatically backed up and saved. This means if you have spent the day working on your books and your computer runs out of battery or the internet crashes, you will not have lost anything, as the data backs itself up.

Will I be able to track my inventory on my new software?

The answer is yes. Desktop software has always been well known for its inventory systems built into it or as an add-on option. With online software, you have the capacity to sync with third party applications that specialise in inventory, as well as many other different functions, which allows you to completely personalise your software to your business.
