Advice from HMRC to prepare for no deal EU exit

The UK leaves the EU on 29th March 2019. This could end up in no deal, so businesses are being advised to plan for every possible outcome of leaving the EU.

VAT-registered businesses that trade within the EU were given 3 advisory actions by HMRC, to prepare for no deal EU exit. These advisories included registering for a UK Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number, deciding whether your business wants to hire an agent to make import and/or export declarations for you, and contacting the organisation that moves your goods to find out if you will need to provide additional information about safety and security declarations. Find out more information on https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/no-deal-brexit-advice-for-businesses-only-trading-with-the-eu

The EORI number will enable businesses that trade with the EU to:

  • Continue to import and export goods with the EU after 29th March 2019, if the UK leaves the EU without a deal
  • Apply for authorisations that will make customs processes easier

How does your business apply for an EORI number?

HMRC wants to ensure that traders have access to the right authorisations ahead of 29 March to ensure trade can keep flowing.
