Changing the face of the accountancy profession

If you grow up in a poorer area or come from a disadvantaged background, it may be unlikely that you’d consider a career in accountancy. But the profession is determined to change perceptions and Page Kirk’s very own Jake Holdroyd is going to be playing an important part in the process.

Jake, who joined us as a Trainee Accountant, feels strongly about the issue at a personal level, as he wasn’t made aware when he was younger of the opportunities that potentially exist. And now he’s been chosen to be a champion for equality and diversity for accountancy apprentices, students and members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

The organisation is a world-leading professional body, which promotes, develops and supports more than 147,000 members worldwide. Jake joins nine other selected champions for diversity and will advocate its importance to student groups and younger members. He’ll also head out to schools and give presentations on careers, while getting involved in industry initiatives and workshops.

Jake says:

“I decided to get involved in the diversity project as my school never informed us of any options and I was lost deciding what I wanted to pursue growing up and don’t want any young person to feel like that, no matter what school they are from.”

“I am very fortunate that Page Kirk allows me to pursue this fantastic opportunity and provided me with all the time and resources required to fulfil my role and pursue my passion. I hope to encourage and inspire the next generation to consider a career in the fantastic, rewarding and growing profession that is accountancy.”

John Wallis, our Senior Partner, says:

“We are all very proud of Jake’s achievements and we hope that all his hard work and dedication will inspire the next generation of accountants. Page Kirk will do everything we can do to support his efforts and look forward to seeing him progress in the role as ICAEW Diversity Champion”.
