Independent Examination Services

Although charities and not-for-profit organisations can benefit from an audit, smaller organisations could find an independent examination more useful and cost-effective. If you are a trustee of a charity, then it is important to remember that the Charities Commission requires an independent examination on your charity’s accounts if your annual income is over £25,000.

Audits tend to be a lot more complex and can be required by law. If you fall into the following two categories, then the Charities SORP requires your accounts to be audited:

  • Gross annual income of over £1million
  • Gross assets over £3.26million and annual income over £250,000

Our independent examination services can also include:

  • Preparation of SORP-compliant financial statements to be filed at the Charity Commission and Companies House, if applicable
  • Providing support in preparing and filing of the annual return at the Charity Commission
  • Advising trustees of any regulatory changes

A report by the Charity Commission stated that only 70% of the accounts they reviewed met their requirements. This means that 30% of organisations submitting their figures risk fines and financial uncertainty in the future.

Independent examinations services ensure that charities are accurate and abide by the legal benchmarks put in place by the Charity Commission, as well as providing reassurance to stakeholders.

Bookkeeping and management accounts services

Unlike most businesses, charities will obtain their income from several sources, such as donations or grants. Income could get lost or combined with other revenue, leading to inaccurate figures being produced. By using cloud accounting software, charities can record and split out their income by source easily, allowing them to monitor their income streams effectively.

The data could also be split further by site/departments. You may have several charity shops across a wide range of areas, for example. Using some of the applications available with cloud accounting software, a charity can obtain daily sales reports directly from the shop tills. Performance can then be monitored, with accurate, real-time information, which allows you to make strategic decisions more easily and provide details more quickly to grant makers, enabling your organisation to grow faster.

Our bookkeeping services for charities can include:

  • Management accounts preparation
  • Preparation and submission of VAT returns in a manner that is compliant with Making Tax Digital (MTD) regulations
  • Cloud accounting implementation and training
  • Comprehensive accounts analysis
  • Tailored advice to help your organisation grow
